The topic of our lesson today is handwashing

First of all we should know why a nurse have to wash her hands correctly before she give some treatment to the patients.

Maybe you will say we have learned how to wash hands for cleanliness since we were children. Yes I know everybody of you can wash your hands well. But there are some differences between the handwashing in hospital and in our daily life.

We know there are many many microorganisms on the skin of our hands. If a nurwww.med126.comse done a nursing practice for a patient without handwashing, the cross-contamination would happen in the patient.  The nurse’s hands will become a media of an  infection .

It is reported that through the handwashing the microorganisms will be taken off from hands about 99%. In hospital handwashing is not only for cleanliness but also for removing microorganisms.  So handwashing is one of the most important measure to prevent spread of hospital-acquired infections.

About the handwashing in hospital there are four of planning objectives:

To deliver patient care with pathogen-free hands

To prevent pathogenic microorganisms from spreading from patient to patient

To protect patient from cross-contamination

To protect the nurses.

The above four of planning objectives are very important and everybody should remember them.

Generally as a nurse in hospital she have to wash her hands in such situations below:

The situations a nurse has to wash hands:

1.Before entering or leaving a ward

2.Before contacting the clean articles or after contacting the dirty articles

3.Before or after going to toilet

4.Before or after an asepsis practice

5.Before donning asepsis gloves or after removing the used gloves

6.Before giving a treatment to a special patient who was infected easily

7.Before or after contacting the wound of patients

Equipment:

liquid soap

  Running water

Towels

Trash can

Procedure:

1. Stand in front of but away from sink. Rationale: Uniform should not touch sink to avoid contamination.

2.Make sure there are towels in the container.

3.Turn on water using food pedal or long arm faucet with elbow.

4.Wet hands under running water. Rationale: Wet hands facilitate distribution of soap over entire skin surface.

5.Place liquid soap on hands. Soap should come from a dispenser, not bar soap. Rationale: This prevents spread of microorganisms.

6.Start to Wash hands (Sequence: each finger, then between fingers, then palm and back of hand, ) wash your hands for at least 30 seconds. During washing rub vigorously, using a firm, circular motion. And keep your fingers pointed down, lower than wrists. .

7. Rinse your hands under running water, keeping fingers pointed downward. Rationale: This position prevents contamination of arms.

Resoap your hands, rewash, and rerinse if heavily contaminated.

8.Dry your hands thoroughly with a towel or paper towel, while keeping hands positioned with fingers pointing up. Rationale: Moist hands tend to gather morn microorganisms from the environment.

9.Turn off water faucet with used towel or dry paper towel, if not using foot pedal.
