Chapter 8, Section3 Making an Anesthesia Bed

Objective:  

1.  To accept and give appropriate treatment to the postoperative client who isn’t fully awake after having anesthesia or surgery.

2.  To prevent the bed from contamination by blood or vomiting matter.

3.  Keep client in a safe and comfortable environment and, prevent  complications

u   Assessment:   surgical site (position), type of anesthesia

Preparation:

1.  Nurse: Prepare all the equipments according to the type of surgery and anesthesia.

2.  Equipment: 

i)Linens: Bottom sheet, Quilt Cover, Pillowcase,rubber drawsheets and drawsheets (each for two)

ii)Anesthesia treatment pan:

In the area of Sterile protective pad:

Mouth-gag, Tongue forceps, Therapeutic bowl, Oxygen nasal tube, Suction catheters, Swab, Spatula, Forceps, Gauze

Out of Sterile protective pad:

Flashlight, Blood pressure meter, Stethoscope, Protective pad, Kidney basin, Adhesive tape, Scissors, Record Card, Pen

Procedure

The following Step One to Four have been taught in former lesson

1)   Gather linens in order of use and put them on a medication trolley, bring it to the foot of the bed;

2)   Arrange furniture and equipment for convenience of use

3)   Turn over the mattress;

4)   Put the bedding on the mattress;

5)   Place clean bottom sheet on the mattress and unfold it, then make up the side next to you (you can reference to the one in closed bed);

6)   According to the surgical site (position) or type of anesthesia, place the rubber drawsheet and drawsheet

7)   Put rubber drawsheet and drawsheet orderly on the middle of the bed, which has a distance about 45~55 centimeters to the head of the bed, then tuck them under the mattress;

8)   Put another rubber drawsheet and drawsheet in sequence on the head of the bed,then tuck under the mattress;

Attention:

i) When making up the top of drawsheet, align it to the head of the bed.

ii) The top of the sheets should be on the sheets in the middle of the bed.

9)   Move to the other side of the bed, make up the rest of the sheets following the same way;

10)  Change quilt cover;

11)  Fold quilt:

i) Fold back the foot of the quilt at first.

ii) Pull the quilt to the foot of the bed with a distance about 15 centimeters between top of quilt and the head of the bed.

iii) Fold the far side of the quilt.

iv) Grip One third of the quilt which next to the nurse,fold it upward twice and, align it to the opposite side of the bed.

12)  Change Pillowcase and let it lean over the head of the bed, with the close end to door.Rational:  To prevent the client’s head from being harmed in case of agitation sometime.

13)  Return furniture to former position;

14)  Place anesthesia treatment pan on the bedside table;

15)  Wash your hands.

Precaution:

1. Operate gently

2. The nurse feels no stress to back or limbs during the procedure.

[Exercise]

1)   Tell the difference between anesthesia bed and closed one.

i) Objective.

ii) Equipment.

iii) Way of folding quilt.

iv) Position of the pillowcase.

2)   The top sheets should be on the sheets in the middle of the bed,tell the reason.

i) Avoid slipping or rolling.

ii) Easy to change.
